Brave Cool WorldThe jazz singer with island family ties has just finished a successful stint here, showing local audiences why she's such a fine artist. And while she doesn't record for a major label, which limits her exposure, Davoy continues to release her music on a small, Internet-distributed label, and this latest album makes for a good introduction to her work.
Its casual, live-in-the-studio tracks were recorded late last year in one of Davoy's favorite cities -- St. Petersburg, Russia -- where her musical compatriot Andrei Kondakov lives. With the exception of their one original collaboration, "When You're Gone," the songs are astute covers ranging from Stevie Wonder to Duke Ellington to Cole Porter to English-lyric Brazilian and Italian standards.
Davoy's strength as a vocalist lies in her sympathetic reading of any given lyric. You can especially hear that on her superb rendition of "I Ain't Got Nothin' but the Blues" and on two consecutive ballads: Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Meditation" and Bruno Martino's "Estate."
Her backup features Kondakov showing a surprising touch on the electric piano. Drummer Ricky Sebastion, acoustic bassist Gregory Vosoboynik and tenor saxist Igor Tomofeyev also put in some fine playing.
