FAR be it from me to question the intelligence of the Irish, but Star-Bulletin writer Mary Adamski ("Me mother was a Murphy"), is in Dublin with friends who have a daughter who is one of the 7,000 Special Olympians from 150 countries making up the largest sporting event in the world this year. Mary reports that when Hawaii's honcho, Nancy Botelho, unveiled special pins for the Hawaiian delegation to trade, she was shot down. The pins (and shirts teammates wore) read, "Powered by Poi." The Irish officials told Hawaii's that "No corporate advertising reps allowed." The Irish Times did a story on the incident, and the Hawaii team was given the OK to keep their team gear ...

LOCAL author David Heenan is doubly happy these days. His latest book, "Double Lives," snagged two awards at the 2003 BookExpo America event in L.A. It was the book of the year silver winner from ForeWord Magazine and was also a finalist in the big Ben Franklin Awards conducted by Publishers Marketing ... Tom Haynes premieres his new golf show tomorrow at 9 a.m. on KKEA Sports Radio. No mulligans allowed (or aloud) -- it's live ...

Pie on the fly

SOMEONE talked a number of politicos to participate in a pie-throwing competition at the Democrats Family Reunion Picnic from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the old Kona Airport. Among those fit to be pied are U.S. Rep. Ed Case, Sen. Russell Kokubun and Reps. Cindy Evans, Bob Herkes, Eric Hamakawa and Eric Chang. Now if the G.O.P. would just stage a quiche-eating contest ..

THEY won't like the description, to be sure, but Oceanic Time Warner Cable has come out with the Ultimate Babysitter. The kids won't be getting underfoot beginning today when digital cable channel 443 will contain programming for kids, cartoons, music, games, kids clubs and more, 24/7...

EVERYONE has to eat somewhere. Erin Brockovich-Ellis dined at Don Ho's Island Grill and didn't send back the water ... Remember Joey Lawrence from "Blossom"? The kid known for the expression, "Whoa!" has never said that since discovering Kimo's in Lahaina as a kid and then dining there annually. Now 27, Lawrence and family revisited the eatery again last week ... More auditions for Gypsy" starring Shari Lynn will take place tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Richardson Theater at Ft. Shafter ...

Messaging from abroad

FORMER isle resident Gary Stevens, who now lives in California, but reads the Star-Bulletin online, said he was "shocked" to read here that Carole Kai was discussing menopause on TV. "She's actually old enough to discuss menopause? I don't believe it. How time flies." ... Former Honolulu Opera Theatre singer Chuck Speake messages us with the sad news that former opera designer Richard Gullicksen has died ... And finally, Brad Powell welcomed the Sunday matinee audience to "On Golden Pond" at TAG's Yellow Brick Studio and announced that Katherine Hepburn, who won an Oscar for the film version of the play, had died that day and the production was dedicated to her ...
