Norman-Ganin wins battle of Asao brothers

Norman-Ganin Asao successfully defended his President's Cup title, defeating younger brother Kellen-Floyd in a sudden-death playoff at Pearl Country Club yesterday.

Norman-Ganin Asao shot a final round 1-under 71 to catch his brother on the last hole of regulation at 215. The two both parred the first two playoff holes with the 20-year-old Kellen-Floyd taking a bogey-4 on No. 3 and Norman-Ganin, 23, sinking his par putt for the win.

Rounding out the top three was Gabriel Wilson of Hilo, who closed with a 2-over par 74 and a 54-hole total of 218.

Christopher Tanabe shot a 2-under 70 to close with a 223 to win the A Flight by eight strokes over Thomas J. Uyeda. Ed "Brada" Jones won the B Flight with a 73-151, finishing nine strokes ahead of Leighton Uyeda.

Despite a final round 89, Wade Mukai held on to win the C flight by two strokes with a 251. Dexter Chun and James Enomoto shared second at 253.

Isle teams head to boys volleyball JOs

Hawaii volleyball clubs will have 18 teams among the 300 competing in 10 divisions at the XXIV USA Junior Olympic Boys Volleyball Championships in Phoenix starting later this week.

Outrigger Canoe Club is entered in five club divisions: 12s, 14s, 15s, 16s and 17s. Asics Rainbows has teams in the 16s and 17s club division while Onipa'a is entered in 14s and 17s club.

Molten Hawaii has two teams in the 18s club division with Hawaii All-Stars and Hokuano in the 18s open division. Hawaii Volleyball Nation, a club with players from Hawaii and California, has qualified for the 14s, 15s, 16s and 17s club and the 18s open.

The tournament runs from July 2-8 at the Phoenix Civic Plaza.

Cheerleading tryouts set for Hawaii-Hilo

Cheerleading tryouts for the University of Hawaii-Hilo squad are scheduled for July 12-13 in the UHH Campus Center.

The July 12 tryout runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The finals start on July 13 at noon.

Interested participants need to be enrolled at either UHH or Hawaii Community College. For more information, call Melody Hanson at 933-8823 or e-mail her at Manulani_20@hotmail.com.

Mid-Amateur qualifier scheduled for Mid-Pac

The USGA Women's Mid-Amateur Championship qualifying tournament, an event for female amateur golfers over 25-years of age, will be held at the Mid-Pacific Country Club on Sept. 9.

The winner of the 18-hole event will advance to the national tournament, Oct. 11-16, at the Long Cove Club on Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Entries must be received by the United States Golf Association by August 6. The cost is $100 to enter.

To obtain an entry application, call the USGA at (908) 234-2300 or download the entry blank from the USGA web site at www.usga.org. Entrants must have a Handicap Index not exceeding 9.4.

BMX 'Race for Life' open to all comers

The 2003 American Bicycle Association "Race for Life" is set for July 5 at Wheeler Army Air Field's BMX track. The event is open to the public and benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

With a $10 donation, entrants can register as late as 5 p.m. on the day of the race. For more information, contact Jason Chang at 625-7827 or e-mail preregbmx@aol.com.
