Man and son killed
in pedestrian accident
The two were hit by a van
as they crossed a highway in Nanakuli
A father and his 7-year-old son were killed last night after the two pedestrians were struck by a van on Farrington Highway in Nanakuli, according to emergency crews.
Ambulance personnel said both victims were in a crosswalk at 87-2070 Farrington Highway and Lualualei Naval Road near the Nanakuli Sack 'n Save at 8:01 p.m. when the van struck and dragged them about 50 feet.
The father, a man identified as being in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency personnel initially called for an airlift to the Queen's Medical Center for the boy but later canceled it. The boy instead was taken to Waianae Coast Comprehensive Center in cardiac arrest, emergency personnel said.
Hospital officials only confirmed that the child was brought to Waianae Comprehensive Health Center, but Waianae police later said that he died at the hospital.
Information was not immediately available on the van's driver and whether alcohol or speed were factors in the accident.
Waianae police said the accident snarled traffic in both directions of Farrington Highway for hours. Police closed the westbound lanes of the highway and contra-flowed traffic on a shoulder lane. Eastbound traffic was diverted onto a dirt road on the makai side of the highway.
