Okoye sponsors free soccer, football clinics

All-Pro running back Christian Okoye of the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers runner back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala are among 10 current and former NFL players who will participate in the Okoye Foundation youth football and soccer clinics this weekend at Mililani High stadium.

Tomorrow's clinic is for ages 8-13 and Sunday's clinic for 14-18. Both clinics are from 8 a.m.-noon.

Also confirmed to participate are Mark Collins, Eric Dickerson, Dokie Williams, John Jackson, Brad Booth, Lance Zeno and John Olinchaulk. Kwame Apea from the Ghana Olympic soccer team will also help out.

Registration can be done online at www.okoyefoundation.org. The drills are non-contact and participants should wear appropriate athletic attire.

Kokx, Chun advance to state match-play final

Defending champion Bobbi Kokx met 15-year-old Mari Chun in this morning's 36-hole final of the Hawaii State Amateur Women's Match-Play Championship at Oahu Country Club.

Kokx, the No. 4 seed, defeated ninth-seeded Bev Kim 5 and 3 in yesterday's semifinals. No. 2 seed Chun topped third seed Bobbie Arakawa, 5 and 4.

The final is set to start at 7 a.m.

Kahuku's Avegalio state track athlete of year

Kahuku High senior Jerrod Avegalio, who holds the state meet record in the shot put, has been named the Gatorade Track & Field Athlete of the Year for Hawaii.

Avegalio is a three-time champion in the discus and two-time shot put winner. He is expected to attend the University of Arizona.

Avegalio is now eligible for the national athlete of the year.

West teams dominate regional soccer play

Teams from California, Colorado and Arizona set the standard in yesterday's quarterfinals of the Snicker's U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.

California-South teams went 16-3, while California-North squads went 11-5. Teams from Colorado finished the day 10-4 with Arizona teams going 10-5.

Also qualifying teams for the semifinals were Oregon (5), host Hawaii (4), Washington (3), New Mexico (2) and Utah (2).

Boys and girls champions in divisions under-14 through under-19 advance to the Snicker's U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships, July 22-27 in Germantown, Md.

Movers fall to Shodai in exhibition baseball

YOKOHAMA, Japan >> Shodai scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 10-5 victory over the Hawaii Island Movers in an exhibition baseball game at Shodai Stadium yesterday.

Kaimi Mead took the loss for the Islanders, giving up six of Shodai's 12 hits and six earned runs. Gavin Ng and Brad Takamori both had three hits each for the Islanders.

6 UH swimmers earn academic All-American

Six members of the Hawaii swimming and diving squad were named to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America's academic All-American teams.

Named to the first team was junior YingJuan Zhen, who has a 3.82 grade point average. Joining her were juniors Cheyne Bloch and Mike Gowdy, both of whom have a 3.6 GPA.

Earning honorable metion were Kurt Boehm (4.0) and siblings Andrew Affleck (4.0) and Jessica Affleck (3.5).

The Wahine swimming and diving team had a cumulative 3.05 GPA this past spring for a No. 56 rank nationally.
