California teams leading the way at regional

In temperatures that reached 88 degrees under mostly sunny skies, the action matched the mercury on the second day of the 2003 U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships.

Heading into the third and final day of group play today, 54 teams are 2-0 and 25 teams have records of 1-0-1, demonstrating the highly competitive atmosphere facing the 212 teams in attendance.

California Youth Soccer Association North led all state associations with a combined record of 16-2-2 for the day, while host Hawaii Youth State Soccer Association teams compiled a record of 5-9-5, including a disappointing 4-0 loss by RHFC Real Copa '86B to the Sereno Golden Eagles before 1,500 fans at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park Stadium.

Defending national champion Colorado Girls Academy improved to 2-0 in the Boys U-19 division with a 4-2 victory over host Hawaii's HSC Bulls '84 Kaula G. The ISC Strikers (Calif.) likewise continued its march toward back-to-back national championships with a 3-0 victory over Crossfire-Hinton (Wash.) in Boys U-18 action.

The Pleasanton Rage (Calif.) rebounded from its opening loss Monday with a 5-0 victory over Real Colorado National, a wild-card entry, in the U-18 Girls division.

White wins national arenafootball2 award

Hawaiian Islanders fullback/linebacker Josh White was named the national Ironman of the Week by arenafootball2 yesterday.

The Ironman award recognizes the league's top player who plays both offense and defense.

White rushed for 52 yards and three touchdowns in the Islanders' 39-38 win at San Diego on Saturday. He also registered six tackles, including two sacks, and forced two fumbles on defense.

He swept the game awards, earning Most Valuable Player, Ironman, and Defensive Player of the Game honors.

White is the second Islander player to receive national recognition this season. Nian Taylor won the Ironman award in May.

The Islanders (9-3) face the Quad City Steamwheelers (9-2) on Saturday at Blaisdell Arena. Saturday is Fan Appreciation Night. All general admission tickets are half price ($7 for adults and $3.50 for students), and must be purchased at the Blaisdell ticket office.

Women's match-play quarterfinals set

The quarterfinals for the Hawaii State Women's Golf Association Match Play Championship begin today at the Oahu Country Club.

Marcie Rudich and Bev Kim tee off at 8 a.m. in the first quarterfinal. Bobbi Kokx takes on Ayaka Kaneko in the second match. In the other bracket, Mari Chun faces Mahina Ah Yuen, while Bobbie Arakawa plays Mona Kim.

18-under All-Stars third at Boys Classic

The Hawaii All-Stars 18-and-under volleyball club returned from the Boys Classic on Monday, having earned third place in the prestigious Long Beach, Calif., tournament.

The All-Stars went 10-1 over the four-day, 71-team tournament, losing only to eventual champion Central Cal.

Beach volleyball tournament at Queens

The Oahu Volleyball Association will hold a men's beach doubles tournament on Saturday at Queen's Beach. The double-elimination tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. and will feature an Open and A division.

Current and former Rainbow Warriors expected to compete in the tournament are Kimo Tuyay, Brian Nordberg, Eyal Zimet, Kyle Denitz, Curt Vaughan and Troy Hotz. Also competing are Alika Williams and Stevie Li.

Registration fees are $30 per team in advance and $40 per team on the day of the event. For information call Randy Morris at 956-1699.
