Wie, Frazier and
the fall of the empire
TWELVE opinions for the price of one:
>> Wow. Great job, Michelle Wie. Do you think maybe she'll finally start getting some national recognition now?
>> Herman Frazier is the real deal. Yeah, you can see what some of those bitter Alabama writers meant when they said Frazier preferred to keep behind closed doors (oh, he doesn't mind the spotlight -- but only on his own terms). But the Jones deal showed UH has got something here.
First, Hawaii paid precisely what I think it can realistically afford for a coach, both fiscally and in the court of public opinion -- about $400,000. The other half is the magic. Frazier not only found the kind of big money that we weren't always sure was out there in support of Hawaii football, he came up with it, too. That's not easy -- the finding or the raising. But he did it.
This is what modern-day athletic directors look like.
>> The most ridiculous thing I've heard in the past few days is the notion that maybe Hawaii will have a better chance to be in the Top 25 now that June Jones makes $800,000 a year (yes, I'm sure AP voters take coaching salaries into account).
That's like me trying to sell my bosses on the notion that I'd suddenly be a better columnist if only they would give me more money.
(Click!) Hey, wait a minute ...
>> And if there are 10 to 12 outside private investors out there, I'm willing to listen.
>> (And if you contributed to my salary, you'd probably want to stay anonymous.)
>> Dick Tomey and Bob Wagner have to be kicking themselves that they came along too soon ... Before Fred vonAppen.
>> Talk about being scared straight.
>> I have always been of the belief that women's sports brings a higher level of enlightenment and respect between genders. Until I saw the guy at the U.S. Cup tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in the "Mustang Ranch" T-shirt.
>> Biggest thrill of the week: meeting Lisa Fernandez.
>> It has been remarked around the office that Cal Lee's departure from Saint Louis will mean the fall of the Roman Empire.
I pick the Visigoths to step into the void, but watch for the Vandals, with their strong O-line, to make a move, with the Huns as a dark horse contender.
>> If Jim Leahey likes Doug Vaioleti, I can't wait.
>> I was going to go to that big soccer tournament everyone is talking about, just to take it in and check it out, have some fun watching a great sports event.
But $5 for parking? Forget it.
I think I'm a walking example of why we don't sell out the stadium anymore ...
