Obrey agrees with Cardinals
Iolani product Kainoa Obrey agreed to terms with the St. Louis Cardinals organization and will begin his professional season in Augusta, N.J., next week.
Obrey, a third baseman, was drafted in the 13th round of the first year player draft after his senior season with Brigham Young, where he had one year of eiligibility remaining. He hit .362 and drove in 65 runs and was the only Cougar drafted. Obrey was taken by the Royals in the 11th round of the 2002 draft but returned to BYU when he couldn't reach an agreement.
Soccer tournaments start at Waipio
The top club teams from 13 Western states opened play yesterday at the 2003 U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Championships.
The 212 state champions and select runners-up in age groups Under-12 through Under-19 began round-robin play, which continues through tomorrow. In the opening round of matches, two of three reigning national champions were victorious.
Teams from event host Hawaii Youth Soccer Association finished the day 8-7-4 with highlights including a lopsided 9-0 victory by the MSC Strikers Gold '85 over Flathead Force (Mont.) in the Boys U-19 division and a taut 1-0 thriller by MSC Strikers Gold '87 over O-USA Black (Ore.) in Boys U-16 action.
The Girls U-17 HSC Bulls '86 Kaula G closed out the first day with a 0-0 draw against Colorado Rush Nike.
UH athletes honored for WACacademics
Forty-one University of Hawaii athletes received conference recognition for their academic endeavors. The Western Athletic Conference announced its all-academic teams yesterday for its spring sports (outdoor track and field, golf, tennis, softball, baseball) and the All-WAC freshmen/transfer teams for all sports. To be eligible, an athlete must have completed one academic year with a 3.2 cumulative GPA and played in 50 percent of a team's contests.Complete results at right.
