Los Banos is choice
to become St. Louis ADThe former wrestling coach is
expected to accept the offer today
Former Saint Louis School wrestling coach Todd Los Banos is expected to take a job as the school's athletic director today, according to sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The position was left vacant last week when Cal Lee stepped down to become an assistant coach for the University of Hawaii football team.
Last night, Los Banos didn't confirm the AD offer, which sources say was made by Saint Louis officials on Friday.
Lee and school president Father Allen DeLong were unavailable for comment last night.
DeLong is scheduled to meet with Los Banos today to put the finishing touches on the deal to become the new AD, sources said.
DeLong is also scheduled to meet with Tim Lino today about the vacant head football coaching position.
Lino didn't accept or decline the job offer last week. He is a principal at a Hawaiian immersion school on the Big Island and would need to get a full-time job on Oahu in order to take it. It's not known if DeLong is ready to offer Lino a position on campus in addition to the head football coaching duties.
The school has been without a football coach since April when Delbert Tengan stepped down after one season. Tengan followed Lee, the winningest coach in Hawaii high school football history.
Saint Louis public relations director Rebecca Fernandes and other sources have said Lee will continue to oversee the hiring process for a new football coach.
The school may also need to bring in new football assistants. Six Crusaders assistants have been attending football practices at Kapolei and may take jobs there.
In seven years as the Crusaders' wrestling coach, Los Banos led the team to state championships in 2000 and 2001. Before that, he spent 14 years as an Iolani assistant and won a state title in 1990 while filling in for head coach Carl Schroers, who was on sabbatical.
