A man died Saturday in a single-car accident near Barbers Point Elementary School.
Police said that at about 11:30 a.m. a 20-year-old man was speeding Waianae-bound on Roosevelt Avenue in a black 1997 Chevy Camaro with a 20-year-old passenger when the car crashed through a locked gate and into the side of a drainage canal wall at Copahee Avenue. Police said the vehicle landed at the bottom of the canal.
Police said the passenger was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. He was upgraded yesterday to guarded condition.
The vehicle's airbags deployed at the time of impact. It is unknown if seat belts were used, police said. The victim's name was not released.
This is the 37th traffic-related fatality so far this year on Oahu, compared with 30 at the same time last year.
