All aboard at the zoo
There's a new way to get around Honolulu Zoo, and that's by hopping aboard the multicolored zoo train, which will offer rides around the zoo for $1 per passenger.
There will be no charge for the train rides today, opening day. Providing the traditional Hawaiian blessing and untying of the maile lei at 11 a.m. will be Na Kahu Kamaki Kanahele and Kauila Clark.
The train is scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. An educational audio presentation, written by the Honolulu Zoological Society, will play as the train moves from the starting point at the big banyan tree, past the elephant, gibbon, alligator, Galapagos tortoise and tiger displays.
Call the zoo at 971-7171.
Isle jazz fest coming
Tickets are on sale for the Hawaii International Jazz Festival in July, celebrating its 10th anniversary.
The summer concerts on Oahu and Maui will once again feature an all-star lineup of international and local musicians. The festival will also provide music scholarships for Hawaii students.
This year's lineup brings back some of the more popular performers of past festivals, along with new talents. Those featured will include flautist Nestor Torres, pianist Makoto Ozone, guitar legend Larry Coryell, vocalist Tierney Sutton and trumpeter Tiger Okoshi.
Local artists include the Honolulu Jazz Quartet, Keahi Conjugacion, Jake Shimabukuro, Gabe Baltazar, Jimmy Borges and Gypsy Pacific.
The Honolulu portion of the festival will take place July 18 and 19 at Blaisdell Concert Hall. The following weekend, the festival travels to the Valley Isle, July 25 and 26 at the Wailea Marriott.
Honolulu ticket prices are $20, $35 and $40, with two-night passes available and discounts for senior citizens, military and students.
Tickets are available at the Blaisdell box office and Ticketmaster outlets, or by phone at 526-4400. Maui ticket prices are $30 and $45, available at Borders Books and Music. Call 591-2211.
Festival organizers are seeking volunteers to help with a variety of activities such as silk-screening T-shirts, postering, passing out fliers and picking up musicians and their guests at the airport.
Qualified applicants can call 941-9974 or e-mail AEWjazz1@aol.com.
