Stanley dominates in USA volleyball victory

Clay Stanley, a former Hawaii Warrior, helped the USA men's national team to a 25-22, 25-21, 30-32, 25-20 volleyball win yesterday over Korea at Western Nebraska Community College.

Stanley pounded 23 kills and had two stuffs and an ace in the second match of a five-match domestic tour through Colorado and Nebraska.

Korea won the first match 3-2 last Sunday.

The tour continues today at the Bank of Colorado Event Center at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo.

Golf Media Association awards scholarships

Merynn Ito and Casey Shoji are the 2002-03 Bill Gee and Monte Ito Memorial Scholarship Award winners. The awards celebrate the careers of Gee, the late Star-Bulletin sports writer and editor, and Ito, a sports writer for the Honolulu Advertiser.

Ito is the first golfer to win two Golf Media Association of Hawaii scholarships. She concluded her sophomore season at Nebraska with an appearance at the NCAA Championship. Ito, a journalism major, won a GMA scholarship two years ago after graduating from Aiea High School.

Shoji, a junior at Whittier College (Calif.), is a 2001 graduate of Roosevelt High, where he earned four letters in golf.

The Star-Bulletin and Advertiser funded the $1,500 scholarships.

MISO masters championship tomorrow

Honolulu United (12-2-1) takes on the Ohana Masters (11-1-3) tomorrow for the first Gordy Yank Cup. The championship soccer game, a memorial for Gordon Beatty and Norman "Yank" Albers, will be played at the Ala Wai Field at 7:30 p.m. Following the match, the Gordy Yank Cup will be presented to the winners by Beatty's wife, Julie and daughter Michelle.

Beatty, an isle resident from 1958-1972, helped start the Oahu Men's Island Soccer Organization master league for players over 45. He died of cancer in March at his home in Sacramento, Calif.

Albers is one of the founders of Honolulu International, one of the original masters teams. He was killed in a car crash in Florida a year ago. There will also be a memorial on Saturday at Kailua Beach.

Camerrer chosen for national camp

Robert Camerrer of MISO's Latin Hawaii F.C. was selected for the USA National Select Team Camp for Region IV. Camerrer, a former all-state soccer player, joins Iovo Stefanov, Jordan Inouye, Carol Hatcher, Mahie Atay, and coaches Josh Fouts and Michele Nagamine at the camp.

The camp starts today and runs through Sunday. It has been relocated to Camp Casey on Whidbey Island in Washington.

Ka'u student qualifies for state rodeo team

Lucan Wong, a senior at Ka'u High School, has earned a spot on the Hawaii high school rodeo team. Wong will be traveling to Farrington, N.M., for the 55th annual National High School Finals Rodeo.

The competition runs July 21-27 and features over 1,500 participants from 39 states, five Canadian provinces, and Australia. The rodeo offers $125,000 in prizes and $150,000 in college scholarships. Contestants must finish in the top 20 of two go-rounds in the competition to advance to Sunday's championship.
