Ultra-marathoners compete for
the longest distance over 12 hours

The Hawaii Ultra Running Team hosted the HURT 12-Hour Trail Race yesterday along the Lower Makiki Loop Trail. Barbie Bowman was one of the participants in the competition, which started and ended at the Hawaii Nature Center.

No longer content to run only marathons, the HURT cross-country runners attempted to see how many 2.5-mile laps they could complete within 12 hours, water and rest stops included. Race participant Mike Rouse turned a corner along the uphill portion of the course.

The rugged trail could not dim the pleasant demeanor of Christal Cuadra, 19, the top female finisher with a distance of 40 miles. The top male finisher was Josef Gyurke, 46, of the Czech Republic, who logged 50 miles.

Blisters did not stop this runner, who simply taped them up and headed back onto the course.
