Movers open
summer ball

The Hawaii Island Movers open their 19th summer baseball season tomorrow with a mixture of collegiate players and high school standouts headed to college this fall.

The Movers play 26 games plus the season-ending international tournament at home and have between 13 and 16 more in Japan. The 40 plus games Hawaii plays is on par with the numerous summer leagues on the mainland and, once again, the Movers will use wood bats.

Rich Olsen, who pitched for the Hawaii Rainbows in the 70's, spent time in the Milwaukee Brewers' organization and played in Japan and Italy, will manage the Movers. His assistants are Les Loo from Iolani, Scott Murray, a former pro player and now an Arizona Diamondbacks scout, and Garrett Yukumoto from Leilehua.

"Our players come from different programs so we're not going to make any drastic changes," said Olsen. "We're just here to try and help them along, help them get better and enhance their talents.

"For the younger players, this is an opportunity for them to get some experience at a little higher level before their freshman year in college. I think the coaches who sent their players here have confidence in us."

Three of those freshmen to be, left-hander Kaimi Mead from Roosevelt, and right-handers Jonathan Serapion from Pearl City and Darrell Fisherbaugh from Novato, Calif., are Hawaii Rainbow recruits.

The Japan trip will have the Movers playing in five cities, certainly a treat for many of the players, but it will be a demanding trip with the only off days being travel days. Olsen also thinks that a host team might even try to get an extra game in on a travel day.

The season-ending tournament will have teams from Japan and possibly a team from South Korea and the Guam National Team.

Single-game tickets cost $3. A season-ticket is available for $50. For more information, call 832-4805.
