Japan withdraws from U.S. Cup

Japan will not be participating in next week's U.S. Cup at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Japanese Softball Association has withdrawn its team from all international competition this summer and has canceled the Japan Cup, scheduled for later this summer in Japan. JSA officials did not give a reason for the cancellation.

The new format of the four-team tournament is a double round-robin.

Canada opens the four-day event with an 11:30 a.m. game against Chinese Taipei. Team USA, which features three players from NCAA champion UCLA, opens against Greece at 4:30 p.m.

Play continues through Sunday's 1:30 p.m. championship game. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Superbrawl action tomorrow at Blaisdell

For Wesley "Cabbage" Correira. tomorrow's Super Brawl 30 isn't just about getting a win. If Correira performs well and impresses Ultimate Fighting Champion president Dana White, he could earn another chance at rival Tim Sylvia for the UFC heavyweight title.

Sylvia, the reigning UFC champion defeated Correira a year ago in the UFC debut for both fighters and went on to win the heavyweight title.

There is also an eight-man tournament that features local fighters Desi Miner and Kaipo Kalama, three Canadians and other representatives from Chicago, Los Angeles, and Detroit. The field was decided by two previous qualifying events in Iowa and Utah.

To win the tournament, a fighter has to beat three opponents in the same night. In two previous Super Brawl tournaments the winner has advanced to a Pay-Per-View deal with the UFC.

The action begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available at the Blaisdell box office and Ticket Master outlets.

McLachlin qualifies for U.S. Public Links

ROMULUS, Mich. >> After a long battle back from wrist injury, Parker McLachlin is finally enjoying the fruits of his labor.

McLachlin, a graduate of Punahou School and UCLA, carded back-to-back rounds of 70 at the Gateway Golf Club to become one of five qualifiers from the Detroit sectional to qualify for the U.S. Public Links Championship.

The national amateur tournament is scheduled for July 14-19 at Blue Heron Pines in Galloway, N.J.

Seasiders ink water polo recruit

The Brigham Young-Hawaii water polo team has added a fourth Californian to its incoming freshman class.

Jamie Jacobson of Malibu (Calif.) High has signed a letter of intent to play for the Seasiders. Jacobson scored 115 goals for Malibu this past season. The Frontier League MVP joins Sam Somerhalder, Kevin van Haaster, Brad Spongberg who have all committed to BYUH.

No Ka Oi travels to mainland

The No Ka Oi 10-and-under and 12-and-under softball teams will compete in the Las Vegas Goodwill Games.

The games begin tomorrow and run through Sunday.

Team members of the 10-and-under division are Heidi Endow, Stacey Kaneshiro, Shauna Kuroiwa, Cristen Lim, Mikki Morihara, Kelli Muramaru, Kaylin Okuma, Jecoliah Pratt, Nalani Taniguchi, Jelene Wong, and Remi Yamamoto.

Keely Bitanga, Kristiann Endow, Jamie Higa, Rebecca Kagami, Kryn Masutani, Corrie Murashige, Sara Nishikawa, Chelsy Okuma, Kaili Taniguchi and Allie Turgeon are part of the 12-and-under team.
