Luxurious learning
Alfredo Cabacungan, the original executive chef of John Dominis, is teaching a series of classes on working with the most luxurious ingredients.
The Kapiolani Community College classes will be hands-on experiences. Each participant, for example, will be given 2 pounds of fresh lobster for the July 1 class and taught to prepare it several ways.
All classes run Tuesdays, 6 to 9 p.m. Cost includes wine. Call 734-9211. Featured ingredients:

Entries are being sought for the 2003 'Ohina Short Film Showcase to take place Oct. 17 and 18 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
Works under 10 minutes of running time are strongly recommended; shorts must be under 30 minutes.
Entry forms are available at Blockbuster locations on Piikoi Street, in Kailua and Market City Mall.
The showcase supports local independent filmmakers by bringing their work to the attention of a broad audience.

Dole alumni sought
Sanford Dole Middle School is looking for distinguished alumni as nominees for its second annual Pride of Dole Award.
Nominees must have attended the school for at least two years, be at least 40 years old and demonstrated a record of bringing honor and pride to the community.

Protect your deal
Beverly Hills entertainment attorney Mark Litwak will conduct two workshops geared to local Hawaii Act 221 investors and filmmakers dealing with off-island production companies and distributors.
"Self-Defense for Writers and Filmmakers" takes place June 21; "Financing and Distributing Independent Features" on June 22. Both workshops will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Participants will learn how to legally protect themselves when acquiring film rights. The seminar will cover contracts and focus on how to financially structure movie deals and negotiate distribution.
