Hawaii sailors move up to third place

DETROIT >> The Hawaii sailing team moved up to third place of the ICSA North American Coed Dinghy Championships yesterday.

The Rainbows started the day in fourth but improved with three first-place finishes and two second-place efforts.

Harvard continues to lead the way with 108 points, followed by St. Mary's with 156 and Hawaii with 173. Southern California is fourth with 188 points.

UH's A-Division team of Bryan Lake and Jennifer Warnock are in third place after 14 races while the "B" team of Joey Pasquali, Steven Brown and Sarah Hitchcock sit in sixth.

Competition will conclude today with four races in the A-Division and six in the B-Division.

Karatti to run for Hawaii track team

Ka'u High graduate Kuulei Karatti and four others have signed letters of intent with the Hawaii track and field team.

Karatti played soccer and basketball in high school in addition to winning the state title in the 100 meters this year.

"Kuulei is a diamond in the rough," UH coach Carmyn James said. "She has a lot of ability and will definitely help us in our sprint and hurdle events."

James also inked two athletes from Canada and two from California.

Eva Tanner, a pole vaulter, and long distance runner Monica Su are from California. Runners Chantelle Laan and Dana Buchanan will come to UH from James's home country of Canada.

Hawaii boxing team going to nationals

Head coach Eichii Jumawan and team manager Bruce Kawano will take a full team to the National Junior Olympics in Alexandria, La., June 13-22.

Representing Hawaii will be Thomas Ordonez (101 pounds), Chazz Moleta (106), Amadeo Ezzo-White (110), Kevin Kahoohanohano (114), Enrique Rivera (119), Brooks Jumawan (132), Mark Rodriques (138), Omar Cabbab (145), Joseph Branco (154), Justin Lawelawe (189) and Arvell Spencer (201).

The Junior Olympic Elite Camp will be held a week after the tournament, and all boxers reaching the finals will be invited. Kahoohanohano has already earned a spot in the camp.

Sakamoto, Phillips head Swim Series

Noa Sakamoto and Christine Phillips are the biggest names in a field of 400 swimmers in the Surf 'n Sea North Shore Swim Series.

The series consists of four events throughout the summer, beginning with the Raging Isle Sprint from Sunset Beach to Ehukai Beach Park June 21.

Phillips, a sophomore, won two state championships for Kalaheo this year and has won her age group 15 times.

Sakamoto, a junior at Punahou, also won a pair of HHSAA championships and is a member of the U.S. Junior National Team.
