Serial rapist’s parents
must pay for extradition

A convicted serial rapist who fled Hawaii before he could be sentenced faces an extradition hearing Monday on Guam.

Guam police arrested Jovie Adora on Friday as he stepped off a flight headed to the Philippines. He had a one-way ticket.

Adora, 26, was free on $310,000 bail after his parents paid $31,000 to a bail bond company. That is money they will not get back. When Adora is returned to Hawaii, his family will also have to pay for the extradition, said Duane Chapman, Da Kine Bail Bonds owner.

Prosecutors did not ask the court to order Adora to surrender his passport when he pleaded guilty in March to sexually assaulting four teenage girls between June 2000 and October 2001 because they did not consider him a flight risk, said Peter Carlisle, Honolulu city prosecutor.

Chapman said he did not consider Adora a flight risk, either.

"I never thought he'd burn his mom and dad."

In addition to paying Da Kine $31,000, Adora's parents put up their home in Ewa Beach and another home in California as bond in case the bail bonds company was forced to forfeit the $310,000 bail, Chapman said. The family will not lose their homes now that Adora is in custody.

Adora was to be sentenced to 20 years in prison last Wednesday for four counts of sexual assault and one for kidnapping, according to a plea agreement.

If he is convicted of bail jumping, with is a Class C felony in Hawaii, he could face an additional five years in prison. However, Carlisle is conferring with federal prosecutors to see if they are interested in handling the case. Adora could face 15 years in federal prison if convicted of a bail-jumping statute on the federal level.
