The Army hopes to complete a controlled burn of 1,500 acres of land in the training areas of McCarthy Flats at Schofield Barracks today to rid the area of invasive plants. Nearly 80 percent of the burn was completed yesterday. The recent unseasonable rainy weather in Central Oahu hampered the Army's operations, which were supposed to have been done last weekend.

Team heads for Asia to find MIA remains

A group of 85 mostly Hawaii-based military experts were to leave today for Southeast Asia to search for the remains of more than eight missing American servicemen who were lost during the Vietnam War.

Teams from the Joint Task Force-Full Accounting and the U.S. Army's Central Identification Laboratory-Hawaii will travel to five provinces in Vietnam to recover the remains, officials said.

Since 1973 the remains of 761 American servicemen, formerly listed as missing or unaccounted for in Southeast Asia, have been found. About 1,900 servicemen are still missing or unaccounted for from the Vietnam War.

Students can learn how to do well on SAT

College Connections Hawaii is offering summer courses at seven Oahu high schools to help students prepare for the Scholastic Assessment Test, or SAT. The deadline to register is Thursday.

The classes are designed to help students raise their scores by learning and practicing successful test-taking strategies. Students in the program last year improved their scores by an average of 100 points, according to Stuart Coleman, director of test preparation.

The six-week course costs $195. Low-income students at Campbell, McKinley and Nanakuli high schools may qualify for a special rate of $95.

The course is also being offered at Maryknoll School, Sacred Hearts Academy, and Mililani and Kaiser high schools. For more information, call College Connections at 540-0434 or visit www.collegeconnections.org.

The free monthly family program will be held in the library's meeting room.

To request a sign language interpreter, call the library five to seven days before the program.

Police ask public's help in 2 hit-and-run cases

Honolulu traffic investigators are looking for information about two different hit-and-run pedestrian accidents last month.
