State wins AYSO
national award
The American Youth Soccer Organization honored AYSO Section 07, the State of Hawaii, as its 2002 National Section of the Year award winner.
The award went to the top section out of 14 nationwide, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, that met stringent criteria of all regions within the section complying with rules, regulations and policies, complete reporting by regions and compliance concerning financial and growth standards.
Hawaii Section Director Mark Stewart accepted the award on behalf of the state's 27 regions.
The AYSO National Region of the Year 2002 award winner was Honolulu Region 178, which runs from Middle Street to 22nd Ave. There are 1,380 AYSO regions.
Region 178 was tops in meeting national goals of growth, increases in participation and financial responsibility.
Junior PGA event slated for next week
The Westfield Junior PGA Aloha Championship is Thursday and Friday at Turtle Bay Resort.
Boys and girls will compete in three age divisions. Participants in the 13-15 and 16-17 groups are eligible to represent the Aloha section at the National Championship in July.
Last year's winners were Kristen Higa and Gabriel Wilson.
