A new champion will get the traditional water baptism at the Oahu Country Club at the conclusion of the 95th Manoa Cup.
Defending champion Travis Toyama, 16, won't get to experience the toss into the pool this year. Toyama was the only previous Manoa Cup champion to reach yesterday's third round, but the top seed was eliminated by 17-year-old Ryan Perez 2 and 1.
There isn't a competitor over the age of 21 in today's quarterfinals. University of San Francisco golfer Kristofer Baptist is the elder of the group of eight at 21.
Baptist prevailed 6 and 4 over Chong Delisi, one of two thirtysomethings in the round of 16. Nineteen-year-old Kellan Anderson took out a competitor nearly 20 years his senior. The University of Hawaii-Hilo golfer defeated Michael Withrow, 38, 4 and 3.
Baptist and Anderson aren't the only collegiate golfers to advance to the elite eight. The University of Hawaii's Kellen-Floyd Asao defeated Alvin Okada 3 and 2.
Asao, the 2001 runner-up, takes on Casey Watabu, 19, who moved into the quarterfinals with a 6 and 5 victory over Tyler Isono.
Burt Bonk needed 19 holes to beat Dylan Nakano. Brandon Abreu defeated Hee Boem Kim 2 and 1.
The 17th-seeded Perez will face Kurt Nino today. Nino, 15, beat boys high school state champion Troy Higashiyama of Mid-Pacific 4 and 3. The Damien Memorial student hopes to improve from last year's semifinal performance, where he was knocked out of the tournament by Toyama.
The four who advance out of today's quarterfinals will play 36 holes tomorrow in the semifinals. The finalists will meet Saturday for another 36 holes.
