UH Wahine sailing
team posts another
top 10 finish

The Hawaii sailing team concluded the 2003 Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's North American Championship in sixth place.

It is the third straight season, Hawaii has finished in the top 10. The Rainbow Wahine won the national championship two years ago and placed second last year.

Hawaii couldn't come back from a slow first day of racing and didn't finish better than second in any of the 36 A and B division races. The Rainbow Wahine sailed in unfamiliar conditions on Lake St. Clair with rain, fog and a light breeze (5-8 knots).

"I think we can hold our heads up high for the way the women performed over the past few days," Hawaii coach Andy Johnson said. "With the conditions that we had to deal with, I think we performed well and learned a lot that will help us for the team races starting tomorrow."

Tufts University handily won it's eighth women's championship. The Jumbos led from the first race and finished the three-day regatta with 159 points.

Tufts had just five double-digit finishes in 36 races. St. Mary's College (Md.) grabbed second place behind its B division team which had the lowest score (53) of any team in both divisions. Old Dominion, last year's champion, narrowly edged Dartmouth (195) for third with 194 points.

Rainbow Wahine Jennifer Warnock, a junior crew, was named an honorable mention All-American.

The team racing begins today.

Mililani names Akiona new soccer coach

Raymond Akiona is the new girls soccer coach at Mililani High School.

He replaces James Uson, who resigned after leading the Trojans to state titles in 2001 and 2002.

"Raymond has been in our junior varsity program for a while, and we felt he is the right person to continue the stability of our program and continue what coach Uson has brought to our school," Mililani athletic director Glenn Nitta said yesterday.

Nitta also announced James Keamo as the Trojans' new girls volleyball coach.

Keamo, a Mililani alumnus, was an assistant under Rudy Sambrano, who stepped down after last season.

In other Mililani athletic news, Kristina Tamondong is leaving as girls basketball coach to pursue her career goals.

Nitta is accepting applications for the position. Resumes can be sent to him at Mililani High School, Athletic Department, 95-1200 Meheula Parkway, Mililani, HI, 96789.
