Cancer Society
gets grants to help
kids’ programs

The American Cancer Society has received two grants to support its camps for children with cancer and development of a nutrition project.

The Schuler Family Foundation gave the society $5,000 to help fund the keiki summer camp at Camp Anuenue, the teen retreat at Camp Ikaika and the family get-together, Families Can Sur Vive.

The children's camp programs are funded separately from the Cancer Society's operating budget and receive no support from Aloha United Way or government sources.

The Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation presented $5,000 to support an Eat Your Rainbow Nutrition Project this year.

The Cancer Society's windward office developed the program to teach proper nutrition to children ages 2 to 5 and appeal to older family members.

The project will be conducted in three phases beginning with development of a curriculum and lesson plans that tie the Healthy Kids Workbook to the seven Hawaii Health Education Standards.
