Judge says no bail
for Kauai airport shooter

A federal judge ordered a man accused of firing two shots at Lihue Airport last month held without bail pending trial.

Lloyd Albinio, 24, is charged with assaulting, intimidating and interfering with a federal officer in the performance of his duties.

Prosecutors say Albinio forced his way past federal security officers at the Lihue Airport terminal on May 8 and fired one shot into the ceiling and into the floor from a semiautomatic pistol.

Albinio's attorney, federal public defender Peter Wolff Jr., had earlier told a federal judge that his client was suffering from a psychological breakdown at the time.

At Albinio's detention hearing before U.S. Magistrate Barry Kurren yesterday, Wolff said his client is responding to antipsychotic medication, but doctors who have treated or observed him have not determined whether his behavior was due to schizophrenia or methamphetamine abuse. Wolff said Albinio was hearing voices.

Albinio admitted to authorities he used crystal methamphetamine, or "ice," said Wes Porter, assistant U.S. attorney. But on the day of the incident, Albinio had no trace of the drug in his system, Porter said.

Albinio's father, Lloyd Albinio Sr., who attended yesterday's hearing in U.S. District Court, said his son has no history of mental illness.

Following his arrest, Albinio was treated at Mahelona Medical Center, a state mental institution on Kauai, before he was transferred to the federal detention center in Honolulu.
