The limited edition Hermès Aloha Scarf featuring images of palms and banyans will be made available during the boutique's opening celebration at Ala Moana Center today through Saturday.




Celebrating Hermès

Learn to make a leather business card holders during classes at Hermès new Ala Moana Center store at 10:30 a.m., 2 and 5 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday.

The free leather craftsmen workshops are part of the boutique's grand opening celebration, which begins today. Reservations are required for the workshops. Call 947-3789.

The new 4,450 square-foot boutique is on the mall level between Gucci and Reyn Spooner. Opening activities include the sale of a limited edition Picotin handbags, inspired by he equestrian feed bag. Only 100 will be made available in Honolulu at $1,500.

In addition, Hermès will reprint a limited edition of the Aloha Scarf, originally designed by Laurence Bourthoumieux in Spring 2000 to pay homage to Hawaii's melting-pot heritage and tradition of aloha. Among the symbols of Hawaii that grace the scarf are banyan trees, plumeria and palms The cost of the scarf is $270.

The company dates to 1837, when Thierry Hermès opened a harness and saddle workshop in Paris. With the growth of the transportation industry during the first World War, the company utilized its leather expertise in the fast-growing luggage business. During the 1920s, Émile-Maurice Hermès extended the family name to saddle-stitched leather goods such as handbags, sport and automotive accessories, silk scarves, belts, gloves and watches.

Hermès' success continued through the Great Depression, when such classics as the Kelly bag, Chaîne d'ancre (linked) bracelet and riding jacket were introduced.

Return for more during Mercier Master Classes running June 26 to 28 when Laura Mercier makeup artists share their latest makeup tricks in a classroom-style setting. Appointments are necessary.
