IMAX delivers ‘Matrix’
in 5 stories of glory

THE RISE in ticket prices at the movies lately has kept me from seeing some of the flicks that everyone is talking about. With some theaters asking for close to 10 bucks for the privilege of sitting in an uncomfortable chair with an obstructed view of what's not exactly the biggest screen, I've found myself choosing to spend that kind of money at a bar instead and just waiting for the DVD to come out in stores.

My attitude will definitely change this weekend, though, when "The Matrix Reloaded" opens on the big screen at IMAX Waikiki. Starting tomorrow, moviegoers will be able to see Keanu Reeves, Jada Pinkett Smith and Laurence Fishburne on a screen more than 5 1/2 stories tall, with a six-channel audio system pumping out 12,000 watts of digital sound.

Tickets are $10 for adults at IMAX Waikiki, and show times are at 1:45, 7 and 10 p.m. daily. Call 923-4629 ...

LOTS OF CONCERTS to tell you about this weekend -- start things off tonight at Pipeline Cafe with former Big Island residents Pepper, who will be joined by Ooklah the Moc onstage. Pipeline will also play host to the Ataris on Saturday night starting at 7 p.m.

Over at Kapono's in the Aloha Tower Marketplace, it'll be a historic weekend of shows when Cecilio & Kapono reunite to celebrate "30 Years of Friends" on Friday and Saturday. 2003 Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winner Kalapana will also perform, and a fireworks display is planned as well. This one should be a fun trip down memory lane; call 536-2161 for info ...

IF ROCK MUSIC or classic Hawaiian harmonies aren't your cup of tea, check out e808. com's "Summer Sessions" tomorrow night at Waterfront Cafe. One Time and Natural Vibrations are scheduled to perform at this one, with doors opening at 9:45 p.m. On Saturday the party moves to Don Ho's Island Grill when All Access Entertainment gets the "Quiksilver and Roxy Surfer Girls Summer Concert Series" under way at 9:30 p.m. B.E.T. and Fiji will be in the house, and DJ Galmiche will keep things going on the decks. 21-and-over only at this one ...

AND DON'T forget about the "Second Annual Import Xtreme Showdown" at the Hawai'i Convention Center on Saturday. Doors open at 2 p.m., and the day's events include a freestyle showdown, "Xtreme" deejay battle, head-to-head car shop challenge and the always entertaining booty contest. Import models Mary Castillo, Francine Dee, Hannah and Sasha Singleton will be there, as will local hotties Alisha Kai and Malia Song. Check out importxs.com for a complete schedule ...
