It’s boom time for
designer Tara Boone

Boonetown: Daniel Boone is certainly more famous; Pat Boone and even daughter Debby have sold more records; but Tara Boone, an ex-Iolani girl now living in New York City, is making a name for herself designing handbags. When in town attending a couple of weddings, Tara talked design with Trini Kaopuiki on the KHON morning news, showed up on the newsstands in People magazine, in the N.Y. Times and on the "Today" show. Later she was feted at an upscale Hawaii Kai handbag party hosted by Sandee Bryon and sold about 50 bags while here. You can find her styles at Ohelo Road at Kahala Mall, the Hyatt Regency Waikiki and at the Four Seasons in Wailea, Maui. In her high school yearbook, Boone is quoted: "Take your fashion and make it happen, but never let them see you sweat." Sounds like she's in a "no sweat" situation today ...

MUSICIAN Martin Denny, a 30-year Rotarian, was honored by the Rotary Club of Honolulu as a "Rotary Treasure." Denny, still going strong at 91, has more than 35 albums to his credit and won a Gold Record in 1957 with "Quiet Village." He's still putting out music, overseeing the final touches on "Baked Alaska," a "compilation" album. And how many folks have written tunes sung by Jennifer Lopez? Denny's "Firecracker" was recorded by J.Lo as "I'm Real." ...

Father's Day horseplay

HAWAII Polo Club President Mike Dailey and his son, Devon, play polo together each Sunday at Mokuleia, but on Father's Day, June 15, they'll be joined by another father-son combo. Nine-goaler Ruben Gracida, of Mexico, will captain a team that includes his teenage son, Westin. The following week, June 22, international polo star Memo Gracida, holder of a 10-goal rating for more than 20 years, will be joined by his teenage son, Julio, who just won the national award for best young player under 20. Sounds like a great way to celebrate Father's Day for two weeks in a row ...

FORMER isle radio man Jim Doney has decided he was far too vital for the sedentary lifestyle he had set for himself after retiring and moving to Georgia. He e-mailed the following to kith and kin: "I have resigned from the ranks of the elderly, and I am moving out of 'Gracious Retirement Living' next week in favor of an apartment with a huge swimming pool, tennis courts, gymnasium and girls in bathing suits." Way to go, Jim!

Artistry and rhythm

BEST-SELLING artist Hisashi Otsuka will be showing his newest work, all in black and white, at the Fine Art Gallery in Restaurant Row June 13 to 15. He'll be in attendance on all three days -- call to find out when -- and he'll sign posters for $50 each, with proceeds going to the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii ... Hard to believe they started singing together 30 years ago, but Cecilio & Kapono will celebrate 30 years of friends at Kapono's Aloha Tower Marketplace club Friday and Saturday nights. They'll be joined by Kalapana. The shows will be recorded for a live CD and DVD release later his summer ...
