Port captain surprises
his sailing friends

LYMAN is one of the best-known names in Hawaii. There's even a Lyman Museum on the Big Island. One of the crew members on the first Hokule'a sail to the South Pacific was David Lyman, whose main task is port captain of Honolulu Harbor. He's the guy who steers huge luxury liners like the QE II into the designated berth. So it was a shock to some of his pals who'd been sailing off Waikiki in Lyman's 28-foot boat, Zeni, when he returned to the Waikiki Yacht Club and docked his boat not just in the wrong slip, but the wrong pier as well. Ed Reinhart hasn't stopped laughing yet. And the inevitable question was met with the reply, "Sober as a judge." ...

THE Dailey family is to polo what Lyman's is to the sea. Mike Dailey and his mom, Murph Dailey, are holding a dinner at Dillingham Ranch across from the Mokuleia Polo Field after next Sunday's match with the highly rated, high-goal Mexican team. And there must be something going on with the animal population in Mokuleia. A letter Murph sent out to new members reads, "Dogs on leach are allowed on the property." And presumably those without leaches as well ...

The stars are out

YOU can imagine the whispering and finger-pointing going on at Auntie Pasto's in Kapahulu last week when funnyman Adam Sandler returned, this time bringing along Rob Schneider, who appears with him in "Fifty First Kisses," also starring Drew Barrymore. (The movie is so named because Barrymore forgets everything that has happened to her daily, so every time she meets and falls in love with Sandler, they enjoy a "first kiss." Dan Aykroyd plays the shrink who tries to deal with her condition.) Sandler and Schneider were big hits in Kapahulu, where Schneider delighted owner Ed Wary's wife, Tina, about how much he loves Italian food. He's in the restaurant business in San Francisco, too, so he knows whereof he speaks. The two comics delighted other diners, shaking hands with all on their way out ...

THE Hilton Waikoloa is well known for its beauty, but it got one-upped the other day when one guest not only sunbathed poolside, but explored the sights solo around the 62 acres. That would be model-turned-actress Jamie King ("Pearl Harbor," "Bulletproof Monk"), whom you may see hosting MTV's "House of Style." With her in the house, the Hilton Waikoloa could have been termed just that ...

HEAVYWEIGHT boxer Obed Sullivan could be seen downing a heavyweight lunch at Dixie Grill. The boxer, who ties on the gloves at the Sheraton-Waikiki in July, tore into a meal of ribs, brisket, shrimp, chicken and fixin's as if it were Evander Holyfield's ear ...

Follies

THE theme of the Diamond Head Theatre fund-raiser was "Chicago," but judging from the flapper dresses and feather boas guests dug out, it might just have well be "Follies." And to the surprise of nobody, the Stephen Sondheim musical has been extended at DHT, adding performances from June 13 to 15, well worth seeing ...
