Government conferences
will be held in Honolulu
Honolulu will be the site of two national government conferences this fall: the Council of State Governments-West and the National Speakers Conference.
The Council of State Governments-West, a nonpartisan group made up of the legislatures of 13 Western states, will hold its 56th legislative conference between July 20 and Aug. 1 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
The meeting is an official state function because the Hawaii state Legislature is hosting the event. The program will include workshops on campaign ethics; Hawaiian history and culture; the impact of Medicaid on state budgets; and the role of the Judiciary in relation to the Legislature.
Also, local comic Frank De Lima will highlight the July 31 lunch program.
For more information, visit the council's Web site at www.csgwest.org/meetings/ Hawaii/contents.html.
Meanwhile, the National Speakers Conference will host its 12th meeting Sept. 17-21 in Honolulu. Calvin Say (D, Palolo), state House speaker, is president of the council's executive committee and serves as host of the event.
Each year, the annual meeting attracts more than two-thirds of all sitting House speakers, as well as House chiefs of staff. For more information, call 800-532-3375.
