Bob Hope has a friend
in isle band leader

ONE localite who's helping Bob Hope celebrate his 100th birthday today -- in spirit anyway -- is band leader Del Courtney. He still cherishes a photo of him with Hope and Melinda Carroll, who was the opening act in the comic's Waikiki Shell show many years ago. At the rehearsal for that show, Hope recognized Courtney, whom he'd appeared with years earlier at the Michigan State Fair, and quipped, "Del Courtney? I thought you were dead!" No, just hiding out in Hawaii as he still is. Hope is one guy the band leader can't call "Kid," as he does almost everyone else. In September he'll be 93. Once a week he gets together for lunch with fellow musicians Martin Denny, who's 91, and Art Todd, a mere 89. And Courtney still conducts the big band on the first Sunday of every month for dancing at the Blue Tropix. It was at that locale I first saw Jennifer and Matthew Wong, the brother-and-sister jitterbug team. Don't want to wait that long to see them? They and many of their students will be jitterbugging the Atherton Y at University and Seaview on Sunday from 7:30 to 10 p.m. ...

What, no Franks?

COMIC Frank De Lima returns to the Palace Showroom in the Ohana Reef Towers on Fridays and Saturdays beginning June 13. In addition, a Father's Day special show is slated for June 15, where you can partake of a brunch special of Frank's regular diet: carved baron of beef, seafood Newburg, teriyaki chicken, baked ham, scrambled eggs and Portuguese sausage, steamed rice, golden hash browns, mashed potatoes with gravy, spaghetti with vegetarian or meatball sauce and, should you require it, a salad bar and lots of choices of cakes and pastries. There may be just a tad of snoring from well-fed customers after that feed ...

WE'VE all seen dancers perform a hula, but how often do you hear people actively discussing it? Kumu hula George Na'ope, George Honokai, Joan Lindsey and Puluelo Park will be among those taking part in a special hula panel at Bishop Museum's third annual music and dance festival on Sunday. It coincides with the final day of the museum's in-house exhibit "Hula, Dace of Poetry." In addition to the discussion, there'll be halau and kumu hula from around the state performing. That's the sway it is ...

ASPIRING screenwriters should be aware that Paramount's Kathie Fong Yoneda will be at UH's Pacific New Media on June 7 and 8 lecturing on the business of screen-writing. For more info call Susan Horowitz at 956-3422 ...

Future voters

YOU can't imply that Gov. Linda Lingle had future voters in mind when she spoke yesterday to the graduating class of La Pietra. There are only 34 seniors on their way to college. Any number of fine universities have accepted the senior girls, but Georgetown has to be the big winner, and not from numbers alone. Both senior class president Nana Hasegawa and student council president Molly Tafoya have chosen to be future Hoyas, whatever that is ...
