Maui onions popwith nutty flavor
 
This dish was prepared by Rowena Felice, winner of the Maui Onion Festival recipe contest, on "Hawaii's Kitchen" Sunday. The show airs at 5:30 p.m. on KHON/Fox. 
 Slice onions into thick rings. Separate rings. Finely chop the largest rings to make about 1/2 cup. Mix chopped onion, garlic, nuts, onion powder, 1/2 cup of the panko, salt and butter. Stuff mixture into remaining onion rings. Dip stuffed rings into egg white and roll in remaining panko. Deep fry.Maui Onion Poppers2 large Maui onions1 clove garlic, minced
 1/2 cup chopped macadamia nuts
 1/4 cup seasoned onion powder
 1-1/2 cups panko
 1 teaspoon salt
 2 tablespoons butter
 2 egg whites, beaten
 1/4 pineapple, chopped
 >> Spicy Pineapple Dipping Sauce:
 3 tablespoons cider vinegar
 2 tablespoons pineapple juice
 1 tablespoon lemon juice
 1 tablespoon salt
 1 tablespoon crushed pepper flakes, optional
 
To make sauce: Whisk ingredients together. Serve with onion rings.
