Summer program offers
lessons in making films

Students will have a chance to work with film and animation instructors from across the United States in a summer program offered by the Kamehameha Schools Maui campus and the Hawaii Filmmakers Initiative.
Daytime classes will be offered for middle and high school students; evening classes for adults and college students.
The hands-on courses in digital production, Web design and animation begin June 16. The daytime sessions run through July 11; the evening sessions through July 17. Each class is limited to 18.
The teaching team includes filmmaker Everett Lewis (Chapman University and the University of Southern California School of Cinema-TV); filmmaker/animator Mar Ramos Elepano (USC and Multimedia University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia); Web designer Amanda Pope; and writer/producer Leanne Goode.
Courses for middle and high school students take place in the digital media lab at the Kamehameha Schools Maui campus. Fee is $300 per class. Friday is the deadline to enroll. Register by calling Janice Newlon at 572-3201, or e-mail janewlon@ksbe.edu.
"The Cinematic Eye": Explore live-action filmmaking using digital cameras and computer formats to learn composition, style, story, screenwriting, editing, sound design, directing and producing by creating four digital projects. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
"The Digital Frontier": Combines Web design and computer animation to create a Web site, develop storytelling capabilities and share information. Students learn Flash animation, explore design and graphic concepts, drawing from cultural resources. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

"Beginning Digital Production": The art of storytelling and the visual language of film are taught through lectures, screenings and discussions. Students will produce two short films and work with a team to produce a third. Cost is $1,500 for residents; $2,750 for non-residents. 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 17 to July 17, plus lab time.
"Animation and Web Design": An in-depth look at the mix of design, animation and storytelling for the Web. Cost is $1,500 for Hawaii residents; $2,750 for non-residents. 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays June 16 through July 16, plus lab time.
