Baraquio took parents’
harsh words to heart

YOU'D think being named Miss America was enough, but not for Angela Baraquio Grey. Her ambition is to host a national talk show and as a modest start has a show on 'Olelo. Angela is back at the UH to get a Master's degree and it's difficult to blend in when fellow students ask if they can have their photos taken with her. You can bet she's a good student, too. Anything below an "A" was frowned on in the Baraquio household and she admits she was once called on the carpet by her parents to ask why she got a "A-." Next time try harder, they told her, and it looks like she did ...

CHRISTIAN musical ministers Randy & Gay Hongo are completing the last of a five-week tour of America, playing at churches, schools, prayer breakfasts and the like. Their faith was tested when they found themselves in a middle of a tornado in Oklahoma, seeking refuge in a convenience store because there was nowhere else to go ...

Sailing through Maui

PARTICIPANTS in the Kahakuloa Challenge, a canoe sailing race from Kahului, Maui, to the Aston Kaanapali Shores Resort, found themselves battling winds of up to 25 knots Saturday. On arrival, they greeted guests with free canoe rides. Even hotel G.M. Mark Mrantz and Aston V.P. Loren Shim joined in ... Diners at Kimo's in Lahaina couldn't help but recognize the slicked back hair of one diner, Miami Heat head coach Pat Riley. He even asked to see Jack Starr, Kimo's marketing manager, who figured it must be due to his longtime family connections with the L.A. Lakers. Starr recalls growing up watching Riley in a Lakers uniform ...

AFTER looking at Sunday's "The Week That Was" column and seeing Augie Rey making his isle debut in 1970, Lamonte Johnson suggests stopping by the Mai Tai Bar in the Royal Hawaiian where the singer is "better than ever." ... Also inspired to e-mail by an old item were the lovely Denise & Jean Ducroix. Jean is the former Third Floor chef who once operated the Palm Garden Restaurant Francais in the Blaisdell Hotel. The couple has been in France for the past 21 years at Le Pont Neuf. Son Etienne returned to Hawaii to work at Roy's on the Big Isle, but has since moved to Cafe Liaison in Tiburon ...

Theater blitz

CAPPING off a week in which I took in five plays in eight days, was a visit to Diamond Head Theatre and "Follies." It contains some of Stephen Sondheim's finest songs, performed by a terrific cast and the best production work I've seen from director John Rampage. Also the longest kiss! ... Kelly Hu seemed like an audience member rather than one-third of the cast of "The Vagina Monologues," admiring the stunning work of Amy J. Carle in particular. Knowing how isle audiences find anything delivered in pidgin hilarious, Hu made one character an old-time tita ... And finally, Mark Pinkosh was simply remarkable in the one-man show, "Road Movie" at the Windward Community Theater's gorgeous Paliku Theater. A pity more people didn't get to see it -- just him and a chair and some remarkable lighting ...
