Asashoryu wins first
title as yokozuna
TOKYO >> Asashoryu won his first Emperor's Cup as grand champion today when Kaio fell to fellow ozeki Musoyama at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.
Asashoryu, who won his third overall title, beat Chiyotaikai (10-5) by yorikiri (frontal force out) to finish the basho with a 13-2 record.
By the time the two faced off Asashoryu had already clinched the title.
Kaio (11-4) could have forced a playoff by beating Musoyama (8-7), who won by tsukiotoshi (thrust down), and if Chiyotaikai had beaten Asashoryu .
Yokozuna Musashimaru, or Hawaii's Fiamalu Penitani, has yet to recover from surgery on his left wrist and is absent for the fourth straight meet.
