Kaio puts Asashoryu’s
title hopes on hold


TOKYO >> Asashoryu's search for his his first Emperor's Cup as grand champion was put on hold for a day.

Ozeki Kaio beat Asashoryu (12-2) today at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament, and must hope ozeki Chiyotaikai beats the yokozuna tomorrow to force a playoff.

Kaio (11-3) must also beat ozeki Musoyama (7-7) tomorrow.

Kaio, who leads the all-time series vs. Asashoryu 6-4, won by uwatenage (overarm throw).

Chiyotaikai, who could have earned a promotion to yokozuna with 13 or more wins and the tournament title, fell to Musoyama to end all chances of winning the title.

Yokozuna Musashimaru, or Hawaii's Fiamalu Penitani, has yet to recover from surgery on his left wrist and is absent for the fourth straight meet.
