Asashoryu clinches
a tie for basho title
From staff and wire reports
TOKYO >> Yokozuna Asashoryu beat ozeki Musoyama (6-7) today to clinch a tie for the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament title with two days remaining.
Ozeki Chiyotaikai fell to fellow ozeki Kaio by hikiotoshi (hand pull down) and is now tied with Kaio for second place at 10-3.
Asashoryu, Chiyotaikai and Kaio are the only sumotori who can win this basho. A loss by either of the ozekis will put them out of contention.
Asashoryu, seeking his third straight basho title, takes on Kaio next, while Chiyotaikai takes on Musoyama.
Yokozuna Musashimaru, or Hawaii's Fiamalu Penitani, has yet to recover from surgery on his left wrist and is absent for the fourth straight meet.
