Porter UH’s first softball
All-American since 2000

Hawaii first baseman Stacey Porter was put on the first team of the Louisville Slugger All-America team yesterday as voted on by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Porter set single-season school records in batting average (.479), home runs (17), walks (38) and doubles (18). She is the career record holder in home runs (38) and walks (75).

The Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year is the first Rainbow to be named to the team since Dana Degan in 2000, who made the second team. The only other first team pick was Brooke Wilkins in 1995.

Porter plans to take off next season and return home to Australia to play on the national team in preparation of the 2004 Olympics.

Theocharidis sweeping up academic honors

The Hawaii men's volleyball team may have been the second-best in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation this year, but it was at the top of the conference's all-academic list released this week.

The Warriors, who finished the season 17-5 behind 19-3 Pepperdine, put six players on the academic all-conference squad, more than any other program.

Costas Theocharidis led the team -- and was fourth in the conference -- with a 3.71 grade point average in business. He was also named to the district's all-academic first team for the second straight time.

Swimmer Kurt Boehm was named to the district's third team for his 3.75 GPA in mechanical engineering and Kailua's Brad Lum-Tucker, who plays tennis for Idaho, is on the second team after posting a 3.95 GPA in health and physical education.

Jake Muise (3.27), Brian Nordberg (3.08), Josh Stanhiser (3.28), Kimo Tuyay (3.16) and Chris Tamas (3.31) were the other Warrior volleyball players honored. Stanford, Pacific and Cal State Northridge each had five players named to the squad.

Ka'aihue joins Circle of Honor

Iolani catcher Kala Ka'aihue joined the Gatorade Circle of Champions yesterday, being named Hawaii's top prep baseball player.

Ka'aihue, who hit .425 with four homers and 25 RBIs, is now eligible to be named the national High School Player of the Year. Ka'aihue will attend Hawaii in the fall.

Recent inductees include Matt Inouye of Mid-Pacific last year, Brandon League of Saint Louis in 2001 and Jason Kaanoi of Kamehameha in 2000.
