Maui occupancy led the state last month with hotels and resorts 76 percent full, on average, up 5.3 percent from 72.2 percent occupancy a year ago, according to the latest monthly survey by PKF-Hawaii. Maui's occupancy approached the 2001 level of 78.6 percent.

Meanwhile, room revenue on Maui and the Big Island reached pre-9/11 levels, a sign of solid performance on those islands.

On the Big Island, revenue jumped 10 percent to $134.66 from $122.44 last year, and surpassed $133.22 in April 2001, PKF reported.

Maui's room revenue increased 9.6 percent to $171.13 in April from $156.08 last year, and nearly reached to the April 2001 level of $173.17.

But Oahu room revenue languished at $70.22, up 1.3 percent from $69.29 last year. Kauai room revenue slipped to $98.92 from $101.42.

"Due to the war with Iraq and the SARS outbreak, Oahu felt the effects of a decrease in Asian travelers, especially in Japan," said Daisy Aio, director of tourism consulting for PKF. "The decrease in travelers was followed by a somewhat dismal Golden Week and led Oahu to a 3.65 percent decrease for the month of April."

Oahu's average occupancy last month was 66 percent, down from 68.5 percent last year, according to PKF.

Kauai occupancy also slipped to 66.3 percent from 66.5 percent. But occupancy on the Big Island rose to 69.4 percent from 64.74 percent.

PKF based its figures on a survey of 130 hotel and resorts statewide.
