Asashoryu maintains lead
with basho winding down
From staff and wire reports
TOKYO >> The Summer Grand Sumo Tournament is heading down the home stretch, with yokozuna Asashoryu staying ahead of Chiyotaikai.
Asashoryu beat Tochiazuma today to improve to 11-1 with three matches left in the basho.
Chiyotaikai (10-2) downed Dejima to keep alive his hopes of catching the Mongolian.
Chiyotaikai still has a match against Asashoryu, so he must keep pace with the lone yokozuna in the tournament until they meet.
Kaio is 9-3 after beating Kotonowaka, but would need a lot of help to have a chance for the Emperor's Cup. Kaio meets Chiyotaikai tomorrow.
Asashoryu, seeking his third straight basho title, squares off against Musoyama next.
Yokozuna Musashimaru, or Hawaii's Fiamalu Penitani, has yet to recover from surgery on his left wrist and is absent for the fourth straight meet.
