McBriar likes
being a Bronco

Mat McBriar is getting a kick out of Denver. But will the Broncos be getting kicks out of the former Hawaii punter this season?

"It's beautiful here. It's nice and clean and the facilities are great," McBriar said last night in a phone interview. "The Broncos are unbelievable. They're going to fly me home (to Australia) on June 11 and back when camp starts on July 7."

The undrafted free agent with the strong leg said he has toyed with the idea of working on kickoffs to improve his stock, especially since his competitors for Broncos punter -- Jason Elam and Micah Knorr -- are also kickers.

"I did some kicking off in Hawaii before I came out here," said McBriar, who has been working out on his own in Denver since minicamp ended last week. "But I've only been punting and running and lifting here."

McBriar said he punted 60 times yesterday. He said he doesn't punt on really cold days when the Broncos practice indoors, because the indoor facility is too small.

"I did all right (yesterday), it was about 40 degrees and windy, so a bit different than what I'm used to," he said.

He said there is no awkwardness between him and the former All-Pro Elam, who are both UH alums.

"I think Jason wants to do as much as he can, including kickoffs and punts. If he wants to, he's got the right, he's a veteran and one of the best there's ever been. All I can do is go out there and do my best," McBriar said. "I got to meet Jason last year in Hawaii and he's a really nice guy."
