Taylor named
af2 Ironman after
win against Wichita


Hawaiian Islander wide receiver/linebacker Nian Taylor was named arenafootball2's National Ironman of the Week yesterday.

Taylor caught four passes for 77 yards and three touchdowns in a 61-55 victory over Wichita at Blaisdell Arena on Friday. Taylor also had six solo tackles, four assists and a fumble recovery.

The Ironman Award goes to the best player on offense and defense.

The Islanders (5-2) play at Cincinnati on Saturday.

Tinman registration deadline May 31

The deadline for entering the 23rd annual Tinman Triathlon is May 31. The entry fee is $80 and applications are available at most running and bike stores.

The 800-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike run, 10-kilometer run event is July 13. It starts at 5:20 a.m. at Ala Moana Beach Park and finishes at Kapiolani park.

Wailea tournament on Maui this weekend

The 18th annual Wailea Open Tennis Tournament is May 23-26 at Maui's Wailea Tennis Club.

Matches begin at 3 p.m. May 23 and at 8 a.m. the last three days. Competition will take place in A, B, C and D class divisions. For more information, call (808) 879-1958.

Vulcan baseball camps set for next month

The Vulcans-Hawaii Baseball School is scheduled for June 10-13 at the UHH baseball field.

The camp is open to students ages 7-12 and runs daily from 1-4 p.m.

Under the direction of Vulcan coach Joey Estrella, the school will provide instruction in the basic fundamentals of hitting, throwing and fielding with opportunities for game experience in controlled scrimmages.

The tuition is $85 and includes a camp T-shirt and an evaluation. Applications are available by calling the UHH baseball office (808) 974-7700.

Hilo to also hold hoops camp: Applications for the Vulcan Basketball School, scheduled for June 25-28, are available at the University of Hawaii-Hilo basketball office.

"Again we're going to stress fundamentals," said Camp Director Eric Sanchez. "Fundamentals are the keys to greater skill and enjoyment. Once you understand them you become a better athlete."

The camp is open to players ages 8-18 and will be held at the UHH gyms. Also helping with the camp will be former Vulcan coach Jimmy Yagi.

The fee is $110 with an application deadline is Friday, June 6. For information, call (808) 959-9052.
