Wie not tuning in to
Sorenstam soap opera

Looking for Michelle Wie's take on Annika Sorenstam playing in a men's PGA Tour event this week?

Good luck.

Her dad, B.J., says Michelle is doing the prudent thing and not commenting on the Sorenstam saga.

"She's avoiding talking about that," the father said. "We have to remember she's a 13-year-old girl."

Yes, a 13-year-old girl -- whose name comes up in the national sports media on a daily basis now.

Wie, the 6-foot tall Punahou eighth-grader who finished ninth at the LPGA's Kraft Nabisco Championship two months ago, has stated playing in the Masters as a goal. She also has sponsor exemptions for pro men's events herself in August and September; the Canadian Professional Golf Tour and the Nationwide Tour aren't quite the PGA, but Wie is sure to make a stir when she plays among adult male professionals.

B.J. Wie said Michelle isn't doing interviews the next couple of weeks while she concentrates on her classes with finals coming up. Then it's another busy summer of golf.

Michelle's Wie's upcoming golf schedule, according to B.J. and 808Golf.com:

>> June 9: Open Sectional Qualifier, C.C. at Heathrow, Fla.

>> June 17-22: U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship, Ocean Hammock Golf Club, Palm Coast, Fla.

>> June 27-29: ShopRite LPGA Classic (LPGA Tour), Seaview Country Club, Galloway Township, NJ.

>> Aug. 14-17: Jamie Farr Kroger Classic (LPGA Tour), Highland Meadows Golf Club, Sylvania, Ohio.

>> Aug. 18-24: Bay Mills Open Players' Championship (Canadian Professional Golf Tour), Wild Bluff Golf Course, Brimley, Mich.

>> Sept. 18-21: Albertson's Boise Open (Nationwide Tour), Hillcrest Country Club, Boise, Idaho.

>> Sept. 26-28: Safeway Classic (LPGA Tour), at Columbia Edgewater Country Club, Portland, Ore.

>> Oct. 16-19: Sports Today CJ Nine Bridges Classic (LPGA Tour), The Club at Nine Bridges, Jeju Island, Korea.

Mid-Pacific to host amateur qualifier

The Mid-Pacific Country Club will host the Hawaii qualifier for the U.S. Women's Amateur Golf Championship on July 15.

The tournament is one of 20 qualifiers for the national event scheduled for Aug. 4-10 at the Gladwyne, Pa. The championship is for female amateurs with a handicap index not exceeding 5.4.

Entries must be received at the United States Golf Association by June 18. The cost is $100 to enter.

To obtain an entry application, call the USGA at (908) 234-2300 or enter online at the USGA web site at www.usga.org.

Entrants may select one of approximately 20 qualifying sites.

Yagi headlines staff at HBA Hoop Camp

Retired Hawaii-Hilo coach Jimmy Yagi heads the staff for the 19th Hawaii Baptist Academy Hoop Camp, June 9-13, at the HBA gym.

The camp is open to boys and girls entering grades 4-12 and runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday.

The cost is $100, which includes a basketball and T-shirt. Space is limited to 120 campers.

Also on the camp staff is former all-district guard Bill O'Rear, Honokaa coach Daphne Honma and Waiakea coach Hamilton Manley.

For information, call Myles Shioji at 551-9563.
