Summer fun
at Zanzabar

IT'S ABOUT that time of the year again -- classes are finishing up for almost everyone, and students on the mainland are starting to return home for the summer.

To celebrate the beginning of summer vacation, the Architechs and Kaizo Speedgear have teamed up again, this time to bring "Teriyaki Tuesdays" to the public. The fun kicks off at 10 p.m. for the 18-and-over college crowd at Zanzabar, located in the Waikiki Trade Center. Check out www.architechshawaii.com for more details on "Teriyaki Tuesdays" ...

WE'RE STILL four months away from the 2003 Aloha Festivals, but organizers are gearing up for the pageantry, parades, street parties, concerts and family activities that will span six islands over six weeks in September and October.

One of the events seeking entrants is the annual Hawaiian Falsetto Contest, celebrating the art of falsetto singing, which dates back to a time when Hawaiian women were not allowed to sing in public. That left it to the men to sing about the Hawaiian culture using high-pitched notes usually reserved for women.

The competition is open to amateur male singers who are at least 18, with the winner receiving a recording deal with Hula Records, $500 cash and a weekend getaway for two on Maui. Radio personality Frank B. Shaner will serve as host. Deadline is May 30. Applications may be picked up at the Aloha Festivals office at Ward Warehouse. Tickets for "Reggae in the Valley" are $10 each, and are available at Northshore News and The Growing Keiki in Haleiwa. Reserved seating is also available in the upper level of Waimea Falls Park's Pikake Pavilion. Doors open at 7 p.m.; call 637-3139 or e-mail midnight@aloha.net ...
