Asashoryu still unbeaten
through 8 days of basho

TOKYO >> Yokozuna Asashoryu remained perfect through eight days of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament.

The Mongolian beat Kotonowaka (5-3) today to go two wins up on his nearest competitors.

Chiyotaikai and Jumonji stumbled in their matches, leaving both wrestlers with two losses in the 15-day basho.

Chiyotaikai lost to Wakanosato (6-2) and Jumonji fell to Asasekiryu (5-3).

Buyuzan, Toki and Kaio are all tied with 6-2 marks.

Asashoryu, who is seeking his third straight Emperor's Cup, next meets Kyokushuzan (3-5).

Yokozuna Musashimaru, or Hawaii's Fiamalu Penitani, has yet to recover from surgery on his left wrist and is absent for the fourth straight meet.

Asashoryu is the only yokozuna in the tournament.
