Ala Wai kidnapping attempt is foiled by park employee
Honolulu police are looking for a kidnapping suspect who allegedly pulled a 23-year-old female into Ala Wai Community Park against her will yesterday morning.
Police said the victim was walking home from a graduation party in Waikiki when she encountered the suspect on the McCully Street bridge about 6 a.m.
Police said the suspect allegedly grabbed her upper arm and started pulling her toward a building in the park. Police said the victim struggled but could not get away. However, the commotion alerted a groundskeeper who started yelling at the suspect. At that point, the victim managed to get away and the suspect also fled the scene. Police have made no arrests in this case and the suspect is described only as a male in his 40s.
Statue theft suspect picked out by workers
A suspect in the theft of a turtle statue valued at $4,395 from the Wyland Art Gallery at Aloha Tower was arrested after she went to court yesterday for other offenses.
The suspect, a 38-year-old woman with no local address, was arrested Thursday in Nanakuli on two contempt-of-court warrants. The detective investigating the May 2 theft of the 11-inch sculpture thought the woman matched the description of the suspect. So he took employees of the gallery to Honolulu District Court yesterday where the employees picked the woman out as the person who stole the statue.
