Lots of choices for
music fans this weekend

TODAY'S payday, and if you've got some extra cash burning a hole in your pocket, there's a lot to do in the next few days.

Fans of traditional Hawaiian music will have to make a choice tomorrow night, however. Will it be the "2003 Slack Key and Ukulele Masters Tour" at the Honolulu Academy of Arts' Doris Duke theater, or the Honolulu concert debut of respected Maui balladeer Uluwehi Guerrero?

Part of the "Na Mele Hawaii: Hawaiian Music Series," the "Masters Tour" features the slack-key guitar stylings of Ozzie Kotani and Ledward Kaapana. Also on the bill are ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro and the talented Gordon Mark. Tickets for this one are $18; call 532-8700 for details.

For Guerrero, who performs tomorrow at the Hawaii Theatre as part of its "Hana Hou! Concert Series," his first performance in front of a Honolulu audience promises to include much of what his fans on Maui have enjoyed for years. The Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning artist will perform songs off his first album, "Ka Manawa Pono," in addition to his latest release, "In My Heart." If we're lucky, Guerrero might even share a few songs that he's working on for the next album. Call 528-0506 for info ...

HIP-HOP FANS also have something to look forward to this weekend. "Trip the Lights" returns to the Coffee Factory on Saturday night with a mix of art and music starting at 6 p.m.

Probably the most interesting aspect of this event is a car "bombing" that's supposed to take place. Don't worry, there won't be any terrorist activity at "Trip the Lights" -- graffiti artists Bike, Tekue and Float will be unleashing their artistic fury on a plain white four-door sedan parked outside the Coffee Factory. Inside, DJs Jedi, Kavet the Catalyst, Skids and others will hold it down on the decks with an open mic for anyone who wants to spit some knowledge.

Five dollars gets you through the door on Saturday night, and as Kavet would probably tell you, don't sleep on this one ...

INTO JAZZ MUSIC? Stop by Indigo's Green Room tonight for "Blue Thursday," the nightspot's new jazz showcase that got its start last week. Join the Ned Flanders Quartet from 8 to 11 p.m. for some hard bop before DJ Mark gets on the turntables to spin Blue Note jazz and jazz house cuts until the place closes at 2 a.m.

As an added bonus at "Blue Thursdays," the good folks at Indigo will offer $2.75 martinis and half-priced pupus all night. There's no cover either, which leaves more money for drinks! Call 521-2900 ...
