[HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL]

Blake named Warriors
girls volleyball coach

Chris Blake, the assistant girls volleyball coach at Iolani School for the past three seasons, has been named the head coach at Kamehameha Schools.

Blake replaces Joey Miyashiro, who resigned earlier this year for personal reasons after three seasons.

Blake, a 1991 graduate of Kamehameha, played three years of varsity volleyball for the Warriors. He is currently a physics teacher at Kamehameha.

"Kamehameha's program has a rich tradition of excellence, and I hope to continue that success," Blake said. "I'm very excited to have this opportunity."

Said Kamehameha athletic director Erv Kau: "Chris is an outstanding young man with a wealth of coaching experience."

Blake was an assistant coach under Dan Kitashima when the Warriors won three consecutive state titles from 1997 to '99.

From 1993 to '97, Blake coached Kamehameha's intermediate and junior varsity boys teams.

"My goal is to make sure our players progress throughout the season, in terms of individual skills and learning to work as a team," Blake said. "I'm not so concerned with wins and losses. If we can progress individually and play together as a team, then I think the wins and losses will fall in place and we will achieve success."

Kamehameha has won 12 state girls titles, including the inaugural tournament in 1969.
