FISHIN' FOR THE BIG ONE

KEN IGE / KIGE@STARBULLETIN.COM
Mike Souza used a throw net yesterday to catch this barracuda, above, near the mouth of Kaelepulu Stream in Kailua. While this fish was a little one that weighed only a few pounds, Souza and fellow fishermen said they have seen another barracuda in these waters nearly 6 feet long, probably weighing over 60 pounds. They've dubbed that fish "Mighty Joe."

Souza unleashed the net as Chris Ricca looked on. A few fish estimated as weighing about 20 pounds could be seen, but were evading the nets in a deep trench. This throw didn't yield any bounty, but Souza already had a small kaku (barracuda) and a few lai.
