HPD offers courses
to kids in high school

High school students interested in attending the Honolulu Police Department's Youth Citizens Police Academy are urged to apply.

The upcoming eight-week class begins June 21. Applications will be accepted until June 6.

Applicants must be a sophomore, junior or senior in high school.

Applications are available on the department's Web site at www.honolulupd.org or call 529-3351.

The academy helps educate youths about HPD policies and procedures, the criminal justice system and ways to reduce crime. Classes also educate students in problem-solving and decision-making. Students meet three hours Saturday mornings.

Topics include juvenile laws, drug and gang awareness, traffic safety and road rage, weapons, violence and what it takes to become a police officer.
