SARS strikes the
Chinatown produce supply

WE HAVEnot have any incidents of SARS in Hawaii, but the epidemic elsewhere is taking a local toll anyway. The delivery woman from Paradise Produce in Chinatown wheeled an order to a Merchant Square restaurateur Saturday, and announced it was the firm's last day in its 23-year history. Much of the firm's business is with Chinatown restaurants, and the SARS scare has had an effect on their business, drifting down to the produce provider ...

I'M not suggesting that it was hot on Maui, but when "Dumb and Dumber" star Jim Carrey stopped into Lahaina Fish Company, it was largely to cool off from the heat. Nothing that a couple of cold ones at the bar couldn't help ... And yes, you sharp-eyed Waikiki diners, that was the sexy Cameron Diaz with some friends dining on lobster skewers and pepper scallops in the Ocean House of the Reef the other night. The playful Diaz -- and can anybody picture here other than as the star of "There's Something about Mary" having a bad hair day? -- told Ocean House manager Robert Comstock that she thought he was cute ...

No D.C. for Lingle

IT was a gracious Gov. Linda Lingle who was talking to the Star of the Sea student body and answering questions. One youngster asked if she'd like to be president some day. Lingle quickly replied in the negative, saying she wouldn't want to leave Hawaii or live in cold Washington, D.C. She added that she'd be happy to serve as governor for two terms, however. If kids in grades one through eight could vote, Lingle would win in a landslide ...

AS a Mother's Day treat, David Patterson took his wife and three kids to the Kahala Mandarin to watch the dolphins. As Dave and Mrs. stood watching the dolphins, he overheard his 8-year-old son, Kai, say, "You did a great job in 'E.T.'" He turned around and there was his normally shy son chatting with Drew Barrymore. The actress, who was about 5 when she filmed "E.T." remembered what being a kid was all about, and complimented Kai on saying something nice about someone's good work. She then introduced herself to Kai's entire family and wished Mrs. Patterson a happy Mother's Day ...

AFTER previewing a couple of tunes from their new CD on the Perry & Price Hanohano Room show, Kapena members wondered on air if they'd ever be invited back. Kelly Boy Delima admitted that someone in the buffet line watched them pile up their brunch plates with mountains of food and told him, "Every time you come on the breakfast show, Perry and Price lose money." ...

Sweet gift

AFTER being selected as National Mother of the Year by American Mothers Inc., Island mom Mervlyn Kitashima was given a case of gourmet chocolate-toffee macadamia candles from Island Princess. She's sharing it with her seven kids and hubby, like her, a Kamehameha Schools graduate. Merv even works at Kamehameha, and the school's president Mike Chun joined in honoring her and gamely offered to help with eating the goodies as well ...
